What do we do at Maharlika?

We’re glad you asked.

Maharlika Martial Arts Concepts is a training space where the ancient Filipino fighting art of Kali meets a range of Southeast Asian martial traditions.

Our curriculum centers on Kali (also known as Eskrima or Arnis), a weapons-based system that develops fluid movement, timing, and adaptability through stick work, blade awareness, empty-hand striking, joint locks, grappling, and weapon disarming. From there, we draw on related Southeast Asian disciplines including Dumog, Silat, Muay Boran, and Panantukan, each adding depth to our approach to movement and combat.

Our approach also honors the philosophy of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, which values simplicity, directness, and efficiency. The result is a training environment where tradition and practical application meet—offering students a well-rounded path for developing skill, awareness, and a deeper understanding of Southeast Asian martial arts heritage.

Kali

In the core of our curriculum lies Kali, an indigenous martial art of the Philippines celebrated for its weapons-based focus. Within the realm of Kali, practitioners delve into the intricate world of hand-to-hand combat, where the fluidity of movements, joint locks, grappling, and specialized techniques for weapon disarming take center stage.

Silat

Silat emphasizes the rich and diverse martial arts heritage of Southeast Asia. Silat focuses on developing practical self-defense skills through the utilization of strikes, kicks, throws, and ground control techniques. Students will explore the unique aspects of Silat, including its emphasis on fluidity, adaptability, and the integration of traditional weapons such as the kerambit and sarong.

Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do, created by Bruce Lee, is a dynamic and adaptive martial art. This course delves into the philosophy of intercepting fist, focusing on efficient and direct techniques. Students will explore elements of striking, trapping, grappling, and the seamless transition between these ranges to develop a well-rounded skill set for practical self-defense.

Life skills for all.

Kali is not just about learning self-defense—it’s about building confidence, discipline, and resilience in kids of all ages. Our experienced instructors create a supportive and fun environment where kids can develop essential life skills while mastering the art of Kali.
